History: New Madrid, County Missouri


New Madrid (pronounced MAD-rid) County traces its roots to the New Madrid district of Spanish and French colonial times. It was established as a county in 1812, during Missouri's territorial period. Named after Madrid, the capital of Spain, the county seat is also New Madrid.

Population: 19,760 (2000); 20,928 (1990)

Land area 678 square miles.
